چکیده

A disturbing aspect of Hawking’s derivation of black hole radiance is the need to invoke extreme conditions for the quantum field that originates the emitted quanta. It is widely argued that the derivation requires the validity of the conventional relativistic field theory to arbitrarily high, transPlanckian scales. We stress in this note that this is not necessarily the case if the question is presented in a covariant way. We point out that Hawking radiation is immediately robust against an invariant Planck-scale cutoff. This important feature of Hawking radiation is relevant for a quantum gravity theory that preserves, in some way, the Lorentz symmetry.

Planck Scale Remnants in Resummed Quantum Gravity †

We show that, in a new approach to quantum gravity in which its UV behavior is tamed by resummation of large IR effects, the final state of the Hawking radiation for an originally very massive black hole is a Planck scale remnant which is completely accessible to our universe. This remnant would be expected to decay into n-body final states, leading to Planck scale cosmic rays.

Quantization of Gravity Based on a Condensed Matter Model

One way the ultraviolet problem may be solved is explicit physical regularization. In this scenario, QFT is only the long distance limit of some unknown non-Poincare-invariant microscopic theory. One can ask how complex and contrived such microscopic theories should be. We show that condensed matter in standard Newtonian framework is sufficient to obtain gravity. We derive a metrical theory of ...

Mode Generating Mechanism in Inflation with Cutoff

In most inflationary models, space-time inflated to the extent that modes of cosmological size originated as modes of wavelengths at least several orders of magnitude smaller than the Planck length. Recent studies confirmed that, therefore, inflationary predictions for the cosmic microwave background perturbations are generally sensitive to what is assumed about the Planck scale. Here, we propo...

Sensitivity of Hawking radiation to superluminal dispersion relations

We analyze the Hawking radiation process due to collapsing configurations in the presence of superluminal modifications of the dispersion relation. With such superluminal dispersion relations, the horizon effectively becomes a frequency-dependent concept. In particular, at every moment of the collapse, there is a critical frequency above which no horizon is experienced. We show that, as a conse...

Thermality of the Hawking flux

Is the Hawking flux “thermal”? Unfortunately, the answer to this seemingly innocent question depends on a number of often unstated, but quite crucial, technical assumptions built into modern (mis-)interpretations of the word “thermal”. The original 1850’s notions of thermality — based on classical thermodynamic reasoning applied to idealized “black bodies” or “lamp black surfaces” — when supple...
